Chapter Twenty
“I can’t believe you can stand up,” said Cherry.
Aubriot had climbed down from his safety seat and was rubbing his forehead. “I remember getting up from my seat once before, but that’s it. What happened?”
“We were attacked by Scythians,” said the Fila voice. “We aren’t sure how they knew we were coming, but when we slowed down they saw their chance and took it. We seem to have evaded them after obscuring our trace. It’s doubtful they could find us now.”
“So that was the ship taking a hit that knocked me out?” asked Aubriot.
“That’s right,” Kes said. “And that wasn’t the only one it took.”
Aubriot tenderly touched the purplish lump on his head.
Cherry was surprised the bruise and swelling weren’t larger. The second blow to Aubriot’s head had been even more powerful than the first. The entire weight of his body had been behind it. “How are you feeling?”
Aubriot said, “I want to see the rest of this ship.” He strode toward the door and out of it.
“What’s he made of?” Cherry asked. “Titanium?”
“When Aubriot was no more than a handful of cells,” said Kes, “he had the most advanced, most expensive genetic engineering available. I wouldn’t be surprised if he could piss rainbows. Uh, sorry, Wilder,” he added, clearly remembering too late about the fourteen-year-old in the room.
The girl chuckled. “It’s okay.”
“Are you two coming to see the ship?” asked Kes.
“In a minute,” Cherry replied. “I want to talk to the Fila.”
Kes held out a hand, inviting Wilder to go ahead of him through the door.
As the two left, Cherry asked, “Do you know why the Scythians attacked? I’m worried about what all of this means.”
“We have guessed at two possible reasons,” the Fila replied. “They offered no warning before attacking. They may view this section of space as their own. We usually avoid these problems by traveling via a method that avoids the use of normal space. Consequently, we have no knowledge of claimed territories.”
“But don’t you run into problems when you seed new planets?”
“All other sentient galactic species we are aware of are atmosphere breathers and it’s the land of rocky planets that is coveted, not the water. Also, we are entirely non-aggressive. Our weapons are only used in defense. Thus, we believe we are not viewed as a threat.”
“Okay, so maybe we invaded the Scythians’ territory,” Cherry said. “You said you could think of two reasons for their attack. What’s the second?”
“The second reason we thought of is that they want to kill you, or at least prevent you from leaving Concordia. We have no reason for using our current method of propulsion except for transporting another species, and it would have been clear from our trace that we were coming from Concordia.”
“It’s clear they want to kill someone,” Cherry said. “Why would they have a problem with us leaving our planet? They didn’t tell us we had to stay put.”
“Perhaps they fear the exact thing you are trying to do: gain support from another powerful civilization.
